Vibroacoustic Therapy · UK

Sound felt in every cell

Low-frequency sound delivered through a therapeutic platform — a deeply calming, evidence-based practice brought to wellness centres across the UK.

Frequency as medicine

Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) was developed by Norwegian researcher Olav Skille in 1982. It involves lying fully clothed on a specially built platform embedded with transducers — speakers that convert audio signals directly into physical vibration.

Unlike conventional massage or sound baths, VAT delivers precisely calibrated low-frequency sound (typically 30–120 Hz, with harmonic layers up to 640 Hz) directly into the body's tissues. The vibration is felt rather than heard — a gentle, pervasive resonance that works from the inside out.

Sessions are deeply calming for most people. The nervous system responds to sustained low-frequency stimulation by downshifting into parasympathetic mode — the state associated with rest, recovery, and healing. Many clients describe it as the most profoundly relaxed they have ever felt.

Vibrotuning practices an open-source model rooted in the original Skille research and subsequent clinical work by Wigram, Dileo, and Lehikoinen — bringing this accessible, non-invasive therapy to the widest possible audience.

Three pathways to healing

The therapeutic effects of vibroacoustic therapy operate through three well-documented physiological mechanisms — each reinforcing the others.

01

Vagal activation

Low-frequency vibration (30–60 Hz) stimulates the vagus nerve — the body's primary parasympathetic pathway. This triggers a cascade of calming effects: reduced cortisol, slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and a shift from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) dominance.

02

Cellular resonance

Every tissue, organ, and cell in the body has a characteristic resonant frequency. When the platform delivers vibration at or near that frequency, the target tissue absorbs energy more efficiently — increasing circulation, reducing muscular tension, and supporting the body's natural repair processes.

03

40 Hz gamma entrainment

A foundational frequency in VAT, 40 Hz sits at the boundary of deep relaxation and heightened neural coherence. Research from the MIT Picower Institute has demonstrated that sustained 40 Hz stimulation promotes neurological health, enhances memory consolidation, and may support long-term brain function.

Grounded in four decades of study

Vibroacoustic therapy has been the subject of clinical and physiological research since the early 1980s. Below is a summary of key findings across the literature.

Strong evidence

Founding clinical documentation of VAT

Skille, O. (1982–1989). Norway

Skille documented the therapeutic effects of low-frequency sound vibration across hundreds of clients, establishing the foundational frequency protocols still used today — including the 40 Hz relaxation entry point and the 50 Hz musculoskeletal protocol.

Strong evidence

Music, vibration and clinical outcomes

Wigram, A. & Dileo, C. (1997). Music Vibration and Health

Comprehensive clinical study demonstrating statistically significant reductions in anxiety, muscle tone, and pain across diverse patient populations receiving vibroacoustic therapy — establishing it as a credible complementary intervention.

Strong evidence

Psychophysiological effects of VAT

Lehikoinen, P. (1997). Finland

Detailed physiological investigation of the body's measurable response to low-frequency vibration, documenting changes in heart rate variability, respiratory rate, and muscular tension — providing a mechanistic basis for the relaxation response.

Moderate evidence

VAT in chronic pain management

Multiple authors (2000–2015)

A body of clinical studies across fibromyalgia, lower back pain, and musculoskeletal conditions consistently shows meaningful pain reduction following VAT sessions, with effects sustained beyond the immediate post-session period.

Moderate evidence

Anxiety and stress reduction

Grocke, D. & Wigram, T. (2007). Receptive Methods in Music Therapy

Controlled studies demonstrate that VAT at 40–52 Hz produces clinically significant reductions in self-reported anxiety, corroborated by measurable decreases in cortisol and sympathetic nervous system activity.

Emerging research

40 Hz entrainment and neurological health

MIT Picower Institute for Learning and Memory (2016–ongoing)

Pioneering research into 40 Hz gamma entrainment suggests sustained exposure may support neurological resilience. Early trials show promise in cognitive function, with active investigation into longer-term implications for brain health.

Strong evidence — multiple studies, replicated findings
Moderate evidence — consistent clinical findings, ongoing study
Emerging research — early results, active investigation

A Vibrotuning session

Sessions run 30–60 minutes depending on your goals. You remain fully clothed throughout. No experience of sound therapy is necessary.

1

Consultation

A brief conversation about what you're hoping to address — stress, pain, sleep, or simply curiosity. We'll discuss any contraindications and select the right frequency protocol for you.

2

Settle in

You lie fully clothed on the Vibrotuning platform — a custom birch ply surface embedded with professional transducers. A blanket is provided. The room is dim and quiet.

3

The journey

Frequencies are introduced gradually, building through opening, deep resonance, and integration phases. Most clients experience a profound state of relaxation within the first few minutes.

4

Return & reflect

The session closes gently. You'll take a moment to reconnect before sitting up. Water is provided, and we'll spend a few minutes reviewing how the session felt.

The therapeutic spectrum

Each frequency used in Vibrotuning sessions is drawn from Skille's original research, subsequent clinical work, and the Solfeggio tradition. Sessions layer multiple frequencies, targeting different physiological and emotional outcomes simultaneously.
